STEAM Senior stands out on and off the soccer field
Isaac Amouzou is a senior at Mount Vernon STEAM Academy who shows the same dedication and precision to his academics that he does on the soccer field. Isaac has spent his high school years developing himself as a highly regarded student-athlete and an exemplary scholar.
Isaac has worked hard to commit himself to achieving high grades in school. He currently has a grade point average of 93.6 and made it onto the high honor roll. He was also awarded a merit scholarship from Mercy University for $32,000.
Isaac has taken several Advanced Placement (AP) courses since his freshman year. Currently, he is taking AP Government and AP Literature, which he enjoys the most because of the interesting topics they learn about. He most enjoyed reading the play “Macbeth” and loves to read different books.
His favorite class from his time at STEAM was AP Chemistry. Isaac states that this class challenged him in a way that other classes did not. In pursuit of passing the extremely arduous course, he and his classmates created a tight-knit study group that helped one another memorize facts and study. He enjoyed learning about how to use titrations and participated in a lab where they used titration tools to measure ink and create solutions.
His biggest accomplishment from his time at STEAM was seeing all of his labor pay off when he passed the AP Chemistry test in junior year, earning himself college credit.
“Passing the test showed me I could really buckle down and get things done,” said Isaac.
Aside from being a great student, Isaac is also heavily involved in extracurriculars. He is a member of the Gaming Club, which he joined in his senior year. He also has participated in indoor and outdoor track since his sophomore year and has gone to nationals for both.
Isaac is the captain of the Mount Vernon Knights Varsity Boys Soccer team. In the fall, he played his last season with the team and looks back fondly on all of the lessons he learned from being captain and player on the team.
“It taught me that sometimes you have to step up and be the example for others,” said Isaac. “When you want to go on to success, you have to be the motivator.”
Along with being a student-athlete, Isaac is a member of Destination College, a college prep program for student-athletes to gain advice and help during the college admissions process. In the end, involved students are awarded an attendance-based scholarship after attending events and being active in the organization.
Isaac has applied to several schools including the University at Albany, Hofstra University, University of Connecticut, and Fordham University. He has been accepted into UAlbany, State University of New York at Cortland, Purchase College and Mercy University with a scholarship.
In college, Isaac plans to study criminology and enter the pre-law track, with the goal of attending law school. During elementary school, his fifth-grade teacher introduced him to a pen pal who was a legal scholar at Cornell University. One day, his teacher said that Isaac reminded her of the scholar, and since then, he has been inspired to pursue law as a career.
“I want to prepare myself for law school,” said Isaac. “I want to take as much as I can from college to be able to pass the Bar Exam.”
Although Isaac is slightly nervous about the end of high school and moving on to college, he knows he is ready to take on the new world and thrive after graduation.
