Cecil H. Parker School holds college and career day

Cecil H. Parker School held its sixth annual “Your Future is Bright” college and career day on Friday, May 26, 2023. Professionals from every background visited the school to discuss their careers and show students the wide array of options available to them.

Saroya Brown, third grade teacher; Ebony Cooper, fourth grade teacher; Jennifer Fuller, third grade teacher; and Julia Gomes, second grade teacher, were on the committee that planned and fundraised for the event.

The day began with a community helpers motorcade behind the school. Firefighters, police officers, and sanitation workers from the Department of Public Works (DPW) brought their emergency and service vehicles to provide students with a demonstration of their jobs.

“The day was a great success and I’m beyond grateful to those who came from near and far to help us in the efforts of inspiring our children in knowing that their future too is bright,” said Nakia Hiland, School Liaison. “It was just all so very fulfilling to see how much inspiration is all around, and we are willing to do what it takes to keep our children motivated by their dreams and inspired about their future.”

The Emergency Sewer Division allowed students to spray down their truck with the large hose attached to it. Other workers demonstrated how they could pick objects up with their trucks or track underground objects in the sewers with their equipment. The sanitation crew also showed children how they collect the garbage and how the trucks function.

Police officers brought their emergency service tank and showed students their equipment and how to use them in emergency situations. They also allowed them to sit in the vehicle and turn on the lights and sirens.

Students also enjoyed watching the firefighter climb the ladder on the truck and exploring both the truck and engine.

Following the motorcade, presenters went into classrooms to talk about their careers with individual classes. Some of the many career paths represented were fashion and creative designers and artists, medical professionals, realtors, welders, authors, musicians, athletes, and entertainers.

“I want to let the children know that they can do whatever they want to do.” said Dae Stevenson, a Parker School graduate and the first woman to work in the Mount Vernon DPW. “Don’t be afraid.”

Assistant Superintendent of Administration, Climate and Culture Dr. Beverley Jones also visited classes throughout the day and participated in the presentations. She spoke to the students about the importance of working hard to achieve your goals and creating a healthy lifestyle for themselves that they love.

Idris Coleman, Creative Director and Owner of Motion Athletics, drove with his team of creatives from Baltimore, Maryland to present to students. He emphasized the importance of hard work and gifted students and staff with his custom sports apparel.

Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard also visited on Career Day, attended the community helpers motorcade and spoke to students throughout the visit.
