Cecil H. Parker School students and staff celebrate their school

Cecil H. Parker School held a Parker Day celebration Wednesday for its students, who bid farewell to each other with food, music and games – as several former students and retired staffers joined to honor the school for the last time before the school closes at the end of the school year.

The school has been celebrating its namesake, who was the first black teacher in Westchester County, for the past five years, Principal Dr. Jacqueline Green said.

“They are very happy to get to party and to celebrate and have fun today,” Dr. Green said as music by a DJ blared in the background.

The New Rochelle-White Plains Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity donated ice cream for the pre-K through eighth-graders on the warm and sunny day.

Outside, students played hoops, chased each other and enjoyed the camaraderie. Inside the auditorium, they enjoyed hot food and snacks while past generations of educators and students reminisced.

Among them was Mary D. Spells, a beloved principal who retired in 1997 after 13 years at the school.

“I enjoyed every moment. I thank God for all the relationships with the students and their families,” Spells said.

“We still have connections; we are like one big family,” Spells said as she was joined by Isabel Cellis, a teaching assistant and PTA president who retired in 2022 after about 40 years in the District.

Former Parker student and recent Mount Vernon High School grad Khyiem Massaquoi addressed the crowd of revelers to express his appreciation for how his life has changed around.

“My time at the school was really challenging. I had a lot of emotional issues – I was a wild child,” he said. “I’m glad I had the people that I did to help me.”

The self-described animal lover said he is planning to study veterinary technology at Mercy University and then pursue a career in veterinary medicine.

Other former students in attendance were twin sisters Chrystal and Christine Anderson, who attended the school from kindergarten to sixth grade and left in 1994.

They both went on to earn their MBAs from Adelphi and are now pursuing careers in marketing in New York City.
